The Holy Cross, Patroness of the Diocese of Cancún-Chetumal

The Holy Cross, patroness of the Diocese of Cancún-Chetumal, holds a profound significance deeply connected to the history and identity of our region. For generations, its presence in the communities of Quintana Roo has been part of the life, faith, and traditions of our people, particularly within the Maya communities.

A particularly important part of this history is the Maya Green Cross, a powerful symbol within the culture and spirituality of the Maya peoples of the region. Found in various ceremonial spaces and communities, the Green Cross developed its own meaning within Maya tradition and became an enduring representation of their identity, collective memory, and connection to community life.

During the historical period known as the Caste War, the Green Cross came to occupy a central place as a symbol of identity and resistance among the Maya people of the Yucatán Peninsula.
