First Bishop of the Diocese of Cancún-Chetumal

Bishop Pedro Pablo Elizondo Cárdenas, L.C., was born on April 27, 1949, in Mexico City. He was a member of the Legionaries of Christ, a religious congregation he joined at a young age and in which he received much of his human, spiritual, and apostolic formation. From the early years of his vocation, he expressed a deep desire to serve the Church through evangelization, Christian formation, and pastoral care of communities.

He completed his ecclesiastical studies in Philosophy and Theology as part of the formation provided by the Legionaries of Christ, preparing for the priesthood with a solid doctrinal, spiritual, and pastoral foundation. He was ordained a priest on August 15, 1981, beginning an active apostolic ministry in various areas of Church life.

For several years, he held various responsibilities within his congregation, particularly in formation, spiritual direction, and evangelization. His ministry was characterized by a strong closeness to the faithful, the promotion of Christian life, and the development of pastoral initiatives focused on the integral formation of individuals and families.

In the late 1990s, he was sent to what was then the Territory of Quintana Roo, where he developed a close relationship with the communities of the region. His pastoral ministry contributed to strengthening the presence of the Church in an area marked by rapid population growth, cultural diversity, and intense tourism activity.

On May 13, 2004, Pope Saint John Paul II appointed him Coadjutor Bishop of the Prelature of Cancún-Chetumal. He received episcopal ordination on July 10 of the same year and, from that moment onward, worked closely in the pastoral governance of the local Church.

On September 15, 2005, following the acceptance of the resignation of Bishop Jorge Bernal Vargas, L.C., he became Bishop of Cancún-Chetumal, becoming the fourth shepherd of this particular Church. In this role, he guided the diocesan community for more than two decades, promoting evangelization, the formation of pastoral leaders, and the strengthening of parish life.

During his episcopal ministry, he promoted numerous pastoral, educational, and social initiatives. He encouraged the formation of catechists, young people, and families, strengthened the diocese’s pastoral structures, and accompanied the growth of Catholic communities throughout the region.

One of the distinctive characteristics of his ministry was his closeness to vulnerable communities and his commitment to bringing the message of the Gospel to all sectors of society. He promoted initiatives focused on social assistance, spiritual accompaniment, and support for those experiencing poverty, migration, or other forms of vulnerability.

Under his pastoral leadership, the Diocese of Cancún-Chetumal experienced significant growth in its ecclesial infrastructure, including the establishment of new parishes, formation centers, and various pastoral initiatives. He also encouraged greater participation by the laity in the Church’s evangelizing mission.

At the national level, he actively participated in various organizations of the Mexican Episcopal Conference, contributing to initiatives related to evangelization, family ministry, and social pastoral care. His pastoral experience and knowledge of the realities of southeastern Mexico made him a respected figure within the Catholic Church in Mexico.

After more than twenty years of episcopal service in Cancún-Chetumal, he concluded his ministry as diocesan bishop. The Catholic community expressed its gratitude for his generous dedication and for the pastoral legacy he left to the Church in Quintana Roo.

Throughout his priestly and episcopal life, he was distinguished by his love for the Church, his devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, his missionary spirit, and his commitment to forming disciples and missionaries of Jesus Christ. His ministry was marked by his closeness to people, his promotion of Christian hope, and his constant desire to proclaim the Gospel with joy.

On January 22, 2026, Bishop Pedro Pablo Elizondo Cárdenas, L.C., passed away at the age of 76. His death brought deep sorrow to the faithful, priests, religious communities, and the many people he accompanied throughout his ministry. He was remembered with gratitude for his pastoral dedication, missionary spirit, and generous service to the Church, particularly in the Diocese of Cancún-Chetumal, where he left a lasting legacy of faith, closeness, and evangelization.

His legacy continues to live on in the communities, parishes, and institutions he helped establish and strengthen, as well as in the countless people who found in him a compassionate pastor, a spiritual guide, and a faithful witness to the love of God.
